Getting Started: Engaging Adults with Community Programs

10:35 - 11:35 A.M.

You’re never too old to learn about compassion! Step outside the classroom during this workshop to focus on a different type of student in your community: Adults. Adult program participants can become your biggest supporters. Some transition to donors, volunteers or fosters, while others provide a pathway for their children and grandchildren to get involved. Altogether, they better the lives of pets and bolster support for your organization. However, engaging this cohort of learners, who are often maxed out on time and energy, can be a daunting task. This session will dive into the successes, challenges and lessons learned while implementing workshops, webinars and programs for adults. You will leave with ideas on how to meet these learners “where they are” to provide valued programs.

Presenters: Ashley Holm, Hannah Mirlis, Zoe Picanso, Connecticut Humane Society

Location: Cascade Hotel, Seville Ballroom

Spotlight Chick Hatching Projects: Let’s Crack Open a Humane Solution

1:30 - 2:30 P.M.

Many schools use chick hatching projects to teach young children about embryonic development. But once they have hatched, where will the chicks go? Once springtime comes many already overburdened animal shelters and rescues are the typical places where teachers will turn to drop off unwanted baby chicks. To address this growing problem, we would like to introduce a humane chick life cycle unit that you can suggest that schools/humane ed. programs use in place of live egg hatching projects. Learn how you can address this issue with your peeps!

Thriving with Compassion: Ensuring Positive Welfare for Animals in Educational Programs

9:05 - 10:05 A.M.

Animals forge meaningful, relatable and personal connections with diverse audiences. In programs, they can elicit empathy, deepen feelings, and ignite a spark in our audiences to become informed and active learners. A variety of species are commonly used in programs including domestic animals like cats, dogs, rabbits, as well as exotic species like different types of reptiles and invertebrates. Any animal that participates in programs should be ensured best welfare in accordance with the five freedoms and/or the five domains. During this session we will explore challenges and benefits to animal ambassadors, how to determine what individual animals or species may be ideal for different programs and how to develop protocols to provide best practices for biosecurity, safety and welfare.

Creating a Path to Industry Diversity Through Community Partnerships

2:30 - 3:30 P.M.

The animal welfare industry is in trouble. We must cultivate a more diverse workforce through the creation of pipelines for nontraditional animal welfare workers. As experts in facilitating respectful relationships between human and nonhuman animals, humane educators are uniquely positioned to lead this charge. However, before we can diversify, we need to make our workplaces more equitable and inclusive. One of the ways the SPCA Serving Erie County education team has done this is by partnering with local education and human services agencies. We are working to equip BIPOC youth and young adults with developmental disabilities with marketable skills. Not only does this positively impact our organization, but also our whole community where there is great need for pet services.

STEM + K for Kindness

8:00 - 9:30 A.M.

Our modern society is constantly changing. The race to be ahead brings new standards in education and careers. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), for instance, is now part of K-12 curriculums. While this may mean advances in some aspects of our lives, others may be affected or disregarded in the process of advancement. Such as minorities, animals and the environment as well.

The good news is that Humane Education can pop up where you least expect. Lets explore how we can fit kindness into STEM activities, making them fun, educational and character building. Basic Humane Education topics can turn into activities that include experiments, video games, creative design and so much more. Get ready to work because these activities are coming straight to you!
